Training Week
The selected candidates will participate in a mandatory training week at our central hub in Diegem, scheduled between 9 February and 15 February 2026
This intensive programme consists of five core modules:
General Background & Organ Donation in Belgium
Rationale and Evidence for Hypothermic Machine Perfusion (HMP)
LifePort® Kidney Transporter – Device & Technical Operation
Cannulation Strategies and Troubleshooting
Protocol, Administration, Documentation & Quality Assurance
Throughout the week, multiple supervised hands-on practice sessions will be provided to reinforce theoretical knowledge.
At the conclusion of the training week, each candidate will complete a formal theoretical and practical sign-off assessment. This evaluation serves as the final validation of readiness to perform the role safely.
Only candidates who successfully pass the sign-off will be officially appointed as Kidney Preservationists in training and added to the on-call rota.
From “in training” to “tutor”
To support new Kidney Preservationists in gradually building competence and confidence, we have implemented a structured three-level progression framework:
Kidney Preservationist in Training.
Your starting level after completing the Sing-Off. During this phase, you will always be accompanied by a Tutor or the Operational Manage. The primary focus is on mastering technical skills, deepening protocol knowledge, and gaining confidence in real-life procedures.
Kidney Preservationist
Once the tutor team confirms you are ready to operate independently, you advance to this level. You will now handle cases solo, with emphasis shifting toward refining communication, situational awareness, and soft skills under full responsibility.
Tutor Kidney Preservationist
Experienced Preservationists who have demonstrated consistent excellence may be invited to become tutors. In this role, you mentor and supervise trainees while continuing regular on-call duties.
Important notes
Compensation increases with each level, reflecting the growing scope of responsibility.
Progression is performance-based and dynamic. If recurring knowledge or performance gaps are identified, a Preservationist may temporarily revert to “in training” status until the required standard is regained.
This system ensures patient and organ safety while providing a clear, supportive pathway for professional growth.
